Rights and responsibilities

As a Wheatley Homes East tenant, you have rules to follow and responsibilities. By signing your Tenancy Agreement, it means you have to be a good tenant and neighbour.

You'll find all of your rights and responsibilities in your Tenancy Agreement and your tenancy handbook. It’s your responsibility to tell us if your circumstances change, including who is staying in the home.

What are my rights and responsibilities?

Here's a quick guide to the main points:

  • you can occupy your home without interference from us as long as you follow the terms in your Tenancy Agreement;
  • you can have your tenancy in joint names with someone else who lives with you;
  • we are responsible for carrying out repairs to make sure your home is fit for living in;
  • if you die, other members of your household living with you can succeed your tenancy;
  • you must occupy the house as your only or main home;
  • you must take reasonable care to avoid damage to the home and to your neighbours’ homes;
  • you and anyone living with you should respect other people and must not harass or act in an anti-social or threatening manner towards anyone else;
  • you must get written permission for any alterations or improvements you wish to make to your home; and
  • you must take all reasonable steps to make sure you, and anyone living with you or visiting you, keeps to the terms and conditions of your Tenancy Agreement.
