Slateford Green support group helps young families

A community group for young parents set up by Dunedin Canmore is supporting families in Edinburgh.

Bumps to Babies

The Bumps to Babies group, based at Slateford Green Community Centre, is aimed at parents aged 16-25. The group provides support, advice and life opportunities for mums and dads.

Parents can take part in Scottish Qualifications Authority courses and also learn how to cook healthy meals on a budget.

There are activities for the kids, trips to soft play and museums, and a free lunch and bus travel to and from the group.

Dunedin Canmore Youth Development Worker Michelle Johnston set up the group to break down the isolation teenage parents can experience, increase their confidence and help them make positive life choices for themselves and their kids.

Shannon Millar, 20, is mum to Lucas. Shannon said: “It’s good as it gets us out of the house and it’s helping us to build skills and confidence. There’s lots of hints and tips for young mums and their bairns. We all help each other out.”

Shannon’s fiancé Richard Brown, 23, added: “It’s great to meet up with other young parents and learn from one another.”
