Wheatley helps tenants in the east claim £2.6m in benefits

Irene is one of 1238 tenants in the last year who has received support from their landlord, Wheatley Homes East.

Last year, Wheatley’s welfare benefits team helped tenants in the east claim more than £2.6 million in benefits they were entitled to but were not claiming.

Irene received support to successfully appeal her claims for Employment and Support Allowance and Personal Independence Payment after they were initially refused.

The 64-year-old said: “Without the experts at Wheatley, like my advisor Jim, I would be sitting here penniless. I would never have known I was entitled to some of the benefits.

“The extra income has made a huge difference to my life as it has helped with buying food and has given me a better quality of life. I don’t know how I would manage without it.

“I can also now get taxis to appointments instead of struggling to get on buses. Jim is my first call if I get any letters regarding my benefits or I’m feeling anxious. He is always there to help.”

Irene is encouraging other Wheatley tenants who are struggling to get in touch.

She added: “I really would say to tenants of Wheatley Homes East to get in touch with the team. If the advisors think you are eligible for a benefit, they will do everything in their power to help you.”

Across Wheatley Group, the welfare benefits team helped 8652 customers claim almost £18.5 million in unclaimed benefits, including accessing Universal Credit, between August 2023 and August this year.
